Schools Workshops
Piccolo Workshops have been delivered in schools across North Tyneside
for several years via North Tyneside Music Service (NTMS) and at
schools in Newcastle and Northumberland on an individual basis.
We currently offer three workshops and the details and prices
of these are available to print off by clicking on the numbered
links below. Resources to support the workshops are also available.
Please note if your school is in the NTMS area, you can book using
points from their catalogue, or if you book direct with us, your
fee is discounted from that shown on the outlines.
1. Sing a Song
Of Everything - is an interactive, lively and fun workshop for
younger school children (Nursery, Reception and Year One) where
Piccolo takes the children on a musical adventure, encompassing
Maths, English, Science, PE, French, Playground fun/PHSCE, Rhyme,
Rhythm and stories.
2.
Sing a Song with Clapping - is a hands on, lively learning workshop
on singing/clapping games for school children from year 2 to year
4.
3.
Sing a Song with Everyone - is an accessible and enjoyable singing
workshop for
school children from year 2 to year 6. It can either be a follow
on from Sing a song of
Everything or stand alone. Piccolo encourages the children to sing
together and
introduces simple part songs, rounds and some harmonies depending
on age and
experience of the children. Any adults welcome to join in, staff,
parents, support staff etc.
Quote " Excellent Sessions! Children of all abilities
were engaged and enjoyed the songs. Very well pitched for our age
range (KS1). They also felt 'wowed' that they'd joined in with a
French Song - great! The CD and resource sheet is great, especially
'Order in the Court room' - we use it for counting in lots of different
sequences, it will be great in Maths." Cath Jordan,
Teacher, West Moor Primary School
Quote "Thank you so much for a wonderful Piccolo
session -the children and staff thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.
I liked the different approach, just beginning a song, without 'teaching'
it." Jemma Robinson, teacher King's Junior School, Tynemouth.
Playground Games
Fun Games and Challenges for Children Aged 4 to 11 is an
A4-size booklet containing about 30 activities, 13 of which tie
in with songs on the accompanying CD. The more complex singing games
are performed slowly, with instructions spoken over the top, so
you can learn each game quickly and easily yourself before attempting
to teach it to pupils. Each game has a recommended age and a minimum
group size, as well as a difficulty rating.
The games and challenges have all been tried and tested on children
in the North East. They are primarily intended for groups who have
participated in a games session or training workshop, but they are
also a useful resource for those leading play activities in schools
and clubs. The CD is intended to help staff learn the singing games
before teaching them to the children. We would recommend that staff
become thoroughly familiar with the material first, then teach it
to a core group of older children who can act as 'mentors', before
introducing the games to larger groups.
Background
Piccolo has worked in over 20 schools in North Tyneside and Northumberland,
running playground games sessions for children up to age 11 years
(year 6). The Children's University (lottery money) has supported
these projects in North Tyneside, as has the Council's Music Education
Service. The sessions cover clapping, running and singing games
and challenges, and in extended projects have focussed on developing
peer mentoring skills in children. Some schools have requested teacher
training sessions in these games, and these have gone down well.
Please contact us if you are interested
in workshops for children or adults.
